You know those little drive-up coffee places that have sprung up everywhere over the last ten years? I want something like that but with food. Food which is as cheap, quickly prepared, and appetizing as the coffee and coffee drinks those drive-up places sell. Because my stomach is still recovering and won't allow me to substitute coffee drinks for food nibbling at something while sitting at my desk is so not an option at the new job.

(Yes, a really bright person could probably figure out some way to ingest food before leaving the house. I think I need some intensive one-on-one tutoring there.)

ETA: I'm aware that drive-through fast food places have existed for some time. We don't have any locally which don't serve fairly nasty food in the morning. Hardee's had some decent stuff... they closed down here. Also, I want my food to be as portable and neatly consumed as a coffee drink. Yes, I am just randomly bitching on a Monday morning.

ok, so if you're asking... Here's what I do.

I get a bunch of zip lock baggies, some healthy type cereal (I usually use bran buds or something), some raisins and some nuts, put a serving size of each in a zip lock baggie, make a bunch of them and throw them in the cupboard. Then in the AM I grab a bag and usually eat it in the car. What i really need is to figure out a way to make it all stick together without giving myself botulism.

And if you didn't ask, please ignore all the above and substitute it with compassionate nodding and the occasional murmer of sympathy.

That's what I liked about staying at [livejournal.com profile] jynxgirl's place... a drive through Tim Hortons. I could grab a frappachino/mocha and a soup-of-the-day or Chilli in Cup and eat while walking into work.

damn, now I'm craving a frappachino...

Anyway, solution, buy one of those wide-mouthed thermos/sport cups, and place ceral in the night before.. then in the morning just add milk and go...no spoon needed. [or whatever semi-liquid food you like].

I have trouble making myself eat breakfast and make myself a decent lunch to take with me, too. I am trying really hard not to buy microwaveable food that comes frozen in a plastic tray because I already know how bored my palate will be after the first couple of days. I have to make Morgane lunch and breakfast, so you would think it would simply be a matter of doing mine while I do hers... but nooooo, that would be too practical and logical. Last night, I made myself a nice chef salad and put everything in plastic bowls to take with me to work (granted, I get an actual lunch break at the same time every day in a kitchen, no less, with a microwave, sink, refrigerator, and stove at my disposal). I also grabbed a large plum and threw that in my plastic grocery store bag (those things come in handy for lots of stuff, even though they are evil) and that is what I had for breakfast this morning. The hard part is going to be remembering to take out something to defrost for dinner tonight (which I haven't done and should have before I left the house this morning) so that I'll have leftovers to make lunch with for tomorrow. And then remembering to take some fruit so that I'll have breakfast.

Why is it so easy for me to handle everything that Morgane needs (packing her lunch, making her breakfast, packing her beach bag with toys, clothes, a towel, bug spray, and sunblock) but I can't do the same thing for myself?

Do you know what I love? Those little McDonald's rectangular hash brown delivery units. They're a perfect little crispy package of hash brown goodness, not messy at all, and easy to eat. And they're not hit-or-miss like the biscuits, which are sometimes yummy, sometimes foul.

I almost never, ever have them, because I a) rarely eat at McDonald's at all (perhaps three or four times a year), and b) almost never eat there in the morning. But I could probably eat five of those things in a sitting.

Anyway.

The Quaker Chewy Bars are pretty decent and convenient. And, unlike some snack/breakfast bars, don't leave a foul taste in your mouth. And ZonePerfect Bars are pretty tasty too, but I think a bit more expensive.

I need to get some dental work done... right now eating anything sweet or sticky, and especially both, is a painful experience. I haven't been able to eat granola bars for a month or two. :-(

I don't think I've seen the ZonePerfect bars in the store. I'll keep an eye out for them!

I don't find them too sticky or too sweet. A bit chewy, but not overly so and I wear dentures.

I wish I could provide tutelage in getting food into one's system before leaving the house, but I'm notoriously bad at it. The best I've been able to manage is (a) put bread in toaster, (b) toast, (c) spread it with something protein-ish (peanut butter, almond butter, sometimes tahini) and (c) choke it down, grumbling all the while.

Even so, it helps.

I want the equivalent of an Ensure drink... only warm, appetizing, affordable, convenient, and filling.

Or the food pills They've been promising for decades now.

Hm. Have you ever tried Carnation Instant Breakfast? You just add it to milk, and it can be nuked for a warm drink. And other than the strawberry, which tastes appallingly artificial, the flavors are pretty decent. Fairly cheap, too.

I can't have it 'cause I'm lactose intolerant and loathe soy milk, but back when I could still drink milk, it was the least obnoxious morning food alternative I found.

It's got enough sugar to throw my blood glucose off for the rest of the day. :-\

I've used it as a "trick my body into ingesting calories" thing before (stress makes it hard for me to eat, I lose weight when going through a difficult time).

(Yes, I tend to be an "eat to live" person, with occasional guided forays into "omg food is GOOD!")
