Non-Stop Fun!
Jun. 26th, 2003 02:26 pmI woke during the night, feeling like there was something caught in my throat. Something big that wanted to get out. (Not pleasant, no.) Becoming awake enough to reason that since I hadn't swallowed anything living, nothing could possibly be trying to climb out of my throat, I coughed and gagged for a bit, then checked the mirror and realized that the tissue at the back of my throat (as well as the rest of my neck) had swollen to an alarming degree. I struggled to swallow some water, managed to get a couple of ibuprofen tablets down, and had to find a sleeping position that would keep my airway open. For a couple hours, I considered leaving a message on Renfroe's work phone, asking him to please call and check on me when he got in... just in case I did, in fact, stop breathing in the night. I thought about calling Chuck, who would probably still be up. I decided to give it another hour, since it was nearly dawn and everything looks better after dawn.
I slept fitfully, waking about every 45 minutes to assure myself that though it felt like I was choking, I was not in fact, in any danger, so my heart could stop racing, thank you, my adrenaline levels could drop, and I could choke down some more water and go back to sleep. The ibuprofen has gradually helped the swelling a bit, and I'm now able to eat soup. My airway is completely clear now... I was wheezing pretty badly for a few hours there. (Yes, if not for the fact that I'm hypothyroid, I'd have been panicking, as I assume most normal people would on discovering that they can barely swallow water and are struggling a bit to breathe.)
I called Renfroe around noon, to tell him I'd like to cancel my request for an iodine-laden cheeseburger, due to the fact that water was about all I could manage to swallow. We laughed at the irony. Fucking irony.
Ahhh, yes. Always interesting. *rolls eyes* The swelling in my salivary glands has gone down, so that's a good thing. It gives me hope that the swelling in the rest of my neck will also go away soon.
ACK!
