From a coworker who doesn't know me all that well (meaning we don't hang out and chat much because she's insanely busy and rarely in the front office), regarding Hurricane Katrina: "When I first heard the name I thought 'how weird, because Katrina is such an uncommon name, and so what are the chances that I'd know someone with the same name as this incredibly destructive hurricane'... and then I thought 'well, it is somehow fitting, because you're definitely a force of nature to be reckoned with.'"

... I ... uh?

I'd actually been eyeing the "Reflections of a Sentient Tornado" (credit for phrase goes to [livejournal.com profile] kahnman) link text on my LJ and thinking it might just be time to change that.

Is Katrina really an uncommon name where you are?

I am only asking because it's not that uncommon here. I mean, it's not common, but also not particularly strange either.

I said that too, once upon a time. :)

And... you *are* a force of nature, but you're the nurturing sort of force.

*love*

No, that's pretty much it. It's pretty rare that I know/interact with someone else named Katrina, but I have met lots of other Katrinas if that makes sense.

I've got a 3rd cousin named Katrina. Haven't seen her since '83. Her family lived in New Jersey, and we went to visit once a year. My dad and hers are cousins.

There is actually another Katrina [my last name here] ... her middle initial is different from mine, I can't remember what hers is. She's about 8 years younger than me, as I recall. It was pretty wild finding (via [livejournal.com profile] kahnman) someone who shares both my somewhat-unusual first name AND my somewhat-unusual last name.

I don't know if she's married/divorced/single, unfortunately I/we didn't keep in touch with the extended cousins when we moved out here. Maiden name is Guetherman.

There's a woman by the name of Gutherman in Missoula. A counselor of some kind. Ran across her name in an article about kids on a work project at Yellowstone I think it was. Don't know if she's related or not...there's 4 different spellings to our last name.

Actually, the name of this hurricane has seemed quite apt to me the whole time. My guilty confession is that I was kind of cheering it on to make landfall at a high Category. Yes, I realize that many, many people have died and more are dying because of this, so it wasn't really a good thing to cheer for. And I really, really hope that mass evacuations are started up again very soon. Those people need help now! If I could open my home to evacuees (sp?), I would, but getting them to Idaho might be difficult.

However, the fact that one of the most powerful and destructive storms in U.S. history has the name of my powerful sister who is going through terrible angst at the moment... I don't know... it just seems appropriate. Kind of a physical manifestation acknowledging the trouble that you are going through.

I never claimed to be rational -- just unique.

Yeah, from a Jungian POV it all makes total sense.

Hence my guilt. :-)

And yeah, I too was hoping it would be big and memorable... without actually, you know, hurting anyone. Which is what makes a storm memorable. So, yeah. Of the two, I chose "fine, don't be memorable." My namesake was apparently channeling my Inner Two Year Old. You know, the one who says "but I am REALLY UPSET!!!!!!" (My Inner Two Year Old has a prety good vocabulary for her age, see.)
