Hair.

We have reached a point, ladies and gents, where it is time to do drastic things with the scalp-hair. Drastic hair-things is a tried and true way to get me through a rough spot or just give me a lift of several weeks' to several months' duration.

Option   Pro   Con

Haircut   Presentable for work, social activities, etc. Won't draw stares. Won't have to deal with parental opinions on hair. Might get a date with a guy.   Won't draw stares. Might get a date with a guy. Emotional-boost will be minimal. Hair is a pain in the ass to care for, and I keep it under a bandanna and hard hat all the time anyway. Costs $20 or so at the salon.

Shave to 1/8"   Cheap: ask a friend to use my clippers. Tried and true. Grows out nicely. Feels AWESOME. Easy-care. Automatically creates distance from everyone except the people who already know me to be pretty damned cool.   Distances people who might, after all, turn out to be cool. Winter is coming, and hair = insulation. Dealing with "dyke" stereotype at work.

Bald as an egg, with or without re-shave upkeep   Cheap: ask a friend to use my clippers and razor. Haven't done it before. Will grow out to the 1/8" and progressively longer lengths. REALLY easy-care.   See above and increase by "as an egg" modifier. Ingrown hairs? Possibility of cutting myself if I try to reshave it myself.

Purple microbraid extensions (as suggested by [livejournal.com profile] canyonwren)   Long hair: haven't had long hair since... umm... well, a really fucking long time. Would look totally fucking incredibly awesome. Definitely something new.   Probably pretty expensive. Don't know anything about upkeep. Would they be damaged by working conditions (dirt and sun)? Definitely more time-consuming than being bald.

I vote for very very short, and some freaky pretty color. You will be beautiful, and it will make you feel better.

Terrible things like what? Situations where women's heads are shaved to shame them?

(I did send pics of last time I shaved my head, right?)

Find out how expensive those microbraid thingies are. Maybe some kind souls might be willing to contribute or something *cough*

Just be careful

Whenever my mom gets too stressed/depressed, she cuts her own hair. Sometimes it's no big deal, but other times it comes out looking quite bad, and just makes her feel worse, and often at the worst times (right before a job interview, for example). Changing your look can be a nice little pick me up, but beware of the effect it could have if things go wrong, and be aware that it might be standing in for something that you know you don't want to do.

Of course, I like natural hair looks on people, so maybe that's just it. ;)

You are so beautiful and have the perfect face shape and features for really short hair. You also have a job that allows such hair and for you to do really wild things with the color without repercussion... other than general good natured mocking by your co-workers. Even with winter coming, you still have to wear the hard hat and likely would need to wear something between your head and that hard hat to keep warm when outside. I've been going progressively shorter with my haircuts and have gotten more compliments the shorter it gets. I have yet to get the lesbian comments... but then I'm kind of offended when I don't get hit on in gay bars, so I doubt I would care if I did. I've been considering that right now may be the last time I can actually go with a permanent and unnatural color for my hair... I'm thinking pink but my main concern is that right now, not all of my clothing will go with that. If my clothing was all black, it would so be pink right now... maybe with black streaks ala Kelly Osborne. And I could get it all cut out by the time graduation rolls around and I have to get a job. (my new job probably won't be one that lets me have pink hair unless I work for a trendy salon or a record company or something like that, which I doubt will happen)

Color is relatively cheap, and a do-it-friendself venture (wouldn't recommend doing it yourself, as most folks can't cover it completely by themselves).
