Cool beans! I'll post my line when I find my notes, but we're related ten generations back! I'm also descended from Sarah Cooke and Arthur Hathaway! We split off there, though, because I'm descended from a different child of theirs (if memory serves, that is). I'm almost positive I'm descended from their daughter, Patience.

Wow. Can I call you "coz"?

Wait, does being distantly related mean we'll never get to fulfill that backpacking-dream you never did tell me about? ;-)

.. or was that MY dream? :-p

Aw shucks, ma'am

So, are you going to share the dream? ;-)

It was remarkably similar to the dream I had starring Richard Feynman the other night, except he wasn't somehow also Alison Bechdel.

Now, *that* would have been weird.

This is a repost. I forgot a few people earlier.

Shared lineage of Katrina and Canyonwren

Francis Cooke and Hester Mahieu (and their ancestors, of course).

Francis came over from Holland with his son John on the Mayflower. Yes, I know it's not a Dutch name. Don't ask me what he was doing in Holland. Hester joined them later.

Their son John Cooke married Sarah Warren.

Daughter Sarah Cooke married Arthur Hathaway.

(Katrina and Canyonwren's lines diverge. Katrina takes all the cool people, I'm sure.)

Son John Hathaway (b. Sep 17, 1653 in Duxbury, Essex County) married Patience Hunnewell (1670-1732). Her last name is under contention, and possibly was "Pope."

Daughter Patience Hathaway (Apr 27, 1710 - 1758) married Rueben Peckhem (b. about 1709). I think Reuben was a minister, but I can't found the records offhand to verify that, though.)

Son Captain Timothy Peckham (b. Nov 6, 1734 in Dartmouth, MA - Apr 5, 1822) married Ruth Gardiner (second marriage for Timothy).

Daughter Rachael Peckham (1763 - 1784) married James Reynolds (1784 - ?).

Daughter Freelove Reynolds (Jul 6, 1786 - Oct 9, 1831) married Daniel Stedman (Apr 25, 1787 - 1859). Yes, that was her name. And it wasn't even the 60's. This name continued down the family through several lines for many generations. Thank the gods I didn't end up with it.

Daughter Freelove Reynolds Stedman (Oct 26, 1816 - Jul 23, 1892) married Thomas S. Tourjee (May 6, 1807 - ?).
Son Herbert E. Tourjee (Jan 24, 1856 - 1927) married Louise. A. Richards on Apr 26 1886 in North Kingstown, RI.

Son Thomas Herbert Tourjee (May 20, 1887 - 1944) married Florence DeMersman.

Daughter Hazel Melissa Tourjee (Jan 24, 1913) married Richard H. H. (Jun 22, 1906).

Son Richard T. H. married Karen K. D.

Daughter Canyonwren (Aug 27) is unmarried and not contributing to the family tree in any way. But her brother, Dr. Canyonwren's Brother, just got engaged, so he may do so.

"Francis came over from Holland with his son John on the Mayflower. Yes, I know it's not a Dutch name. Don't ask me what he was doing in Holland. Hester joined them later."

Probably trying to live in peace and worship as he chose.

From the link above:

ANCESTRAL SUMMARY:
The ancestry of Francis Cooke is not known. Several ficticious ancestries have been presented, some clearly hoaxes (one can be found in "New Light on the Pilgrim Story", chapter 6. For a discussion of why this is a hoax, see English Ancestry and Homes of the Pilgrim Fathers, by Charles Banks.

There is conflicting evidence about the birth of Francis Cooke. A note scribbled in Bradford's Journal says Francis Cooke died above the age of 80, meaning he was born before 1583. However, in August 1643, he was in a list of men of Plymouth between the age of 16 and 60 allowed to bear arms. This means he was born after 1583. Also, he was married in Leyden in 1603, so he probably would have been at least 21 at the time. This means a birth before 1583. The fact that all these records seem to conflict suggests that Francis Cook was probably born in 1583.

Charles Banks mentions a Francis Cooke baptized on 6 April 1572, in Biddenden, Kent, England, son of Thomas. However, this person is about ten years too old for the Francis of the Mayflower. Cooke had been living in Holland about eight years before the arrival of John Robinson and the rest of the Pilgrims. His wife Hester was from Canterbury, England, so perhaps that is where he is from as well. Francis is described as a "Woolcomber from England" in Dutch records dating back as early as 25 April 1603.

Francis' wife Hester Mahieu was the daughter of Jaques and Jenne Mahieu, French Waloon refuges that had fled to Canterbury, England where Hester was born about 1584. When in Leyden, Holland, from 1603 until the arrival of the Pilgrims, Francis and Hester were members of the French Waloon church. However, in 1606 Francis and his wife left for a trip to Norwich, and they returned in 1607 to have their son baptized in the Church, and in 1608 they rejoined communion with the Walloon Church in Leyden. Sometime between 1611 and 1618, the Cookes switched and began communion with the Pilgrims' Separatist church in Leyden.

In 1620, Francis and son John embarked on the Mayflower, leaving behind his wife and younger children (who would come later when the Colony was more settled).

I've got a good number of Freeloves in my family tree. It was a very popular Puritan name. The best combination, though, is "Freelove Luce" (surname pronounced "loose").

You can trace back to the 1600s! Very jealous. The Eccles clan get stuck in 19th century Lithuania and keep changing the family name to try and confuse us.

Hell, some of my lines trace back to the Vikings. (The accuracy of that research is somewhat in doubt. One line has been traced back to the Patriarchs of the Hebrew Bible. That research is almost assuredly utter bullshit.) My family (almost all lines) has been Mormon since the 18-somethings, so that's a lot of obligatory genealogical research.

Hmmmpp

There are quite a few Jews that can trace their lineage back that far, my dear, there are well established lines of descent from the House of [King] David, and quite a famous line too.

This mute here, doesn't even freaking know where in "Russia" the KAM (Kahn) family is from (moved to the USA ~1910), because the family refused to speak of the "old country". Grrrrrr! <=== One rather frustrated geneaologist.

Yes, I am aware of this. My family is overwhelmingly Northern European, with a heavy emphasis on the British Isles. To my knowledge, the Diaspora didn't leave any large groups of Jews in that area. We are disgustingly white-bread. I'll wager it's possible that my ancestry taps into some Jewish lines, but probably not that line. I chalk it up to wishful Mormon thinking.

I can trace...

um...

Well, according to my father's mother, I have at least one Mayflower ancestor.

Since I'm in Maine and my parents' families are from Maine and at some point New Hampshire and some of them have been for a very long time, I'm not shocked.

However, it's mostly not traceable. There are far too many illegitamicies... my maternal grandfather's parents were supposedly horse thieves and changed the name, then died when he was young.

No one's really done much genealogy, and I don't know... a lot of it couldn't be traced. The names are missing.

Things like this make me want to though.

Oh, and Katrina, dear: Yarmouth, Massachussetts is now known as Yarmouth, Maine. My mother teaches there; it's half an hour from me. At least, I think it's the same Yarmouth. It was founded around then. Could be a different Yarmouth, Mass, of course.
