I got daycare set up for the boys. They start on Friday. They'll be going to a "day camp" run by their favorite daycare worker in the world, Dave. (Toward the end of the school year, Mark remarked that it would be really neat if Dave were his dad. When I reported this to Dave, he beamed and said that had made his entire week.) They'll get to swim on Mondays and Fridays, and take field trips on Wednesdays. They're all excited and happy.

As I was pulling out of the parking lot to pick up Eliza on the way to the potluck, Renfroe pulled up beside me. He said "You can't leave yet! You've got a hug delivery to receive!" What a sweetheart, huh?

The YWCA potluck was nice. I met lots of nice people, and saw some familiar faces. I'll do my first shift at the shelter Friday from 8am - 12pm. While sitting and talking, the outgoing volunteer coordinator overheard me say that I was a Computer Science major. She was, too. We did the geek-talk for a few minutes, but I out-geeked her by a long ways. She programs, she likes to program, but she doesn't get that disturbing gleam in her eye when you mention programming languages and projects. (I do.) Anyhow, the conversation led to a "aha" on her part: they'd been thinking how nice it would be if the calendar of shelter and crisis-line shifts were online, so advocates could easily see which slots weren't filled and sign up. I told her that project would be pretty easy, and I'd be happy to do it. I started generating ideas and describing how it would work. I was rewarded with big eyes and gaping mouths. Love that part. It's like you'd just told someone "Well sure, I can totally turn water into wine! It's no problem at all! Do you prefer white or red?"

There are two job openings at the Office of Public Assistance, for eligibility examiners. Reading the job announcement, they're asking for people to have what I consider an unreasonable amount of knowledge regarding DPHHS policies, rules, procedures, databases, etc. Two people have now told me they think I'd have a good chance of getting the job, though. One of them ([livejournal.com profile] bluemanxcat) used to work there, and the other is my TANF caseworker. I'm going to apply. The worst they can tell me is "you suck and should be flipping burgers."

In the meantime, I'm going to be doing a "WEX Site" (Work Experience Site) thing at the YWCA, so I can count my hours there for my required 30 hours/week of "work and job-seeking activities." Nifty.

My caseworker at the WORC office (the very assertive one) is also an advocate at the YWCA. I mentioned this to the volunteer coordinator, who replied "I'll bet she's a real hardass, huh?" Yes. Yes, she is. Not in a bad way, but yes.
