I was resting in my Easy-Bake Oven Bed™, wondering why I'm so tired today, when I heard a burst of "This is SERIOUS, pay attention to me, MEDIC" howling outside my bedroom window. Preliminary voice-analysis told me that it was Danielle, my five year old neighbor. She's extremely bright, adorable, and prone to High Drama. I did a quick mental "where are my children and are they responsible for this" inventory and decided they were probably innocent, having requested permission to go outside the immediate area about 15 minutes hence.

She called for her brother, but didn't seem to be blaming him for her pain, saying instead that her ear really really hurt. Adult-voices started to appear. The neighbor adults (not her parents) asked what happened and if she were okay. Their voices expressed mild concern, but this was obviously not a hospital-worthy injury. "MY EAR!!!! I HIT IT ON A TREEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!" Her wailing increased in volume as the adult voices concurred that she'd run into a tree and hit her ear. "MOOOMMMMMMMMEEEEEEEEeeeeeee!! I want my MOMMMMMEEEeeeeee!!" Mommy's voice appeared. "MY EAR!!!!!!!!" The other adults informed Mommy that Danielle had ridden her bike into the tree and hurt her ear.

Mommy asked Danielle, "OH, you were riding your bike without a helmet OR shoes?"

"MY EAR!!!!!!!!!!"

"Yeah, your helmet would have covered that."

"DADDDDDDDEEEEEeeeeee!!!! I WANT MY DADDDDDDDDEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!"

Oh, the drama of childhood. Damned adults never follow your goddamned script.
