Not the very most useful no, but I was very glad to know the hazards of heroism.
I hate late periods. Knee pain is increasingly just "there" for me, but I'm not a fan of things which increase the knee pain, so yeah, heroism is right out for me.
The other links I found weren't terribly helpful either... they were either "folks who play DDR saying 'when I play a lot, my knees and ankles really hurt' but lacking the knowledge to find ways to decrease the potential for RSI" or "folks who have the appropriate knowledge but who make rather harsh fun of anyone who posts 'when I play DDR a lot, my knees and ankles really hurt' instead of addressing the potential for RSI."
Maybe you could search out information on people who get injured like that while dancing, or even running - something that involves repeated stepping and such. There's got to be more about that.
That's what I'm trying to do... eventually I'll hit on the right combination of search terms.
What I basically want to know is this: is there a dance pad/mat which will greatly reduce the shock/impact of the steps and if so, how much would it cost and how durable is it?
So far DDR appears to be the perfect aerobic workout for me: I don't have to leave the house, it's enjoyable*, the intensity is easy to adjust, it keeps records all by itself (I love records but am lousy at keeping them), I don't need daycare, I can actually interact with the kids while working out (thus lessening parental guilt at taking time out for me), there's no monthly cost... I am getting concerned about the potential for RSI, though. My knees have never been "good." One of my coworkers has had multiple knee surgeries and walks leaning heavily on a cane. She's probably between 50 and 55. I really, really don't want to be doing that at 50. Or 60. I could probably accept it at 70.
* I talked myself into "my knees are fine, I can totally go do a few rounds" like eight times yesterday, only to be reminded on my way down the stairs that my knees are NOT fine and definitely need a day or two to rest... that's the first time I have EVER done "I want to workout, ow dammit I can't, but I really want to, maybe just a little bit won't hurt, ow dammit I can't!"
