Quote of the Day...

... is itself a pseudoquote.

To quote Shakespeare:
"It is code written by an idiot, full of conditional statements and casts, validating nothing."

Links of the Day

(Appropriate, given that today and tomorrow are Kill the VB Project coding days... no no, please do send e-mails and distract me. Not kidding. No, it won't slow me down.)

From [livejournal.com profile] flexibleflyer: The full source of that very happymaking "digits of Pi" song

From [livejournal.com profile] girl_clone:
1. The Daily WTF: fun with commenting code
2. Automated commentation, adjusted for coder's personality!

Being fairly familiar with [livejournal.com profile] dimfuture's code and looking at that last example, I'm wondering if he uses this. He does produce very well-commented code. My comment settings would probably be
  • FUD Factor: 2
  • Humor Level: 9
  • Verbosity: 2-6 (in some cases, especially the stuff I'm doing for WORD, nearly every line is commented, but I try to keep the comments shortish... if it seems likely that the person maintaining the code will have less programming skill than I, I comment a LOT)
  • Self-Importance: 2
  • Relevance: 8 (the comment is highly relevant to the code, the movie/song/book/other references are not)
  • Bitterness: 0-5 (usually 0, 5 for the VB project)

What I Want

I have this problem with missed posts... someone* on my friends list who is very important to me will post something important, and I won't see it. I think this happens because the person in question opens the posting window, takes a while to compose the post (which makes sense for important stuff), then posts... and I've already read my friends page during that time, so the post ends up below the three or four posts which mark "here's where I left off."

So, what I want: a thing which accumulates all posts tagged "important," from everyone on my friends list or just specific users whom I select, and displays them in a format similar to the friends page format.

This seems very buildable, but I've never made any LJ-things before. Has anyone already made this? If not, does anyone know how one would go about doing it?

* I am not referring to one specific person, but to any of a group of people to whom I feel especially close. Instances of important posts include "I'm engaged" or "my pet died" or "my friend died" or "I am seriously ill" or "I need help" or "I am seriously depressed" .... etc. Things I want to know about the same day they're posted, not find out about a week later when the LJ post which I do see makes no sense and I go looking in the person's LJ archives for context.

Random

It is my fervent opinion that more coder-types should include "Hoon de hoon, bork bork bork" in their code.

That is all.

Nostalgia Attack!

Okay, I very, very rarely get nostalgic. I'm pretty content to experience things once and move on to new, exciting (or otherwise adrenaline-charged) adventures. There is, however, one notable exception.

I'm looking at a page on e-bay, bouncing and giggling like a four year old )
