"Disk Cleanup" should NOT take 40 minutes... to have the progress bar show that it's 1/7 done.

I shudder to think how long defrag will take.

If you're running OS X, you shouldn't have to. It does a pretty good job of both self-defragmenting and avoiding it altogether. To get a badly fragmented disk on OS X or most Unix filesystems, you have to be doing some insanely huge ammounts of constant file creation and deletion.
