Congressional Food Stamp Challenge -- U.S. Members of Congress to Live on a Food Stamp Budget from May 15-21

Let's hear it for the welfare queens on the hill, trying to get PB&J through TSA checkpoints because it's all the food they've got left for the next two days. Sure, a month would be a lot more educational than a week, and a few years would provide participatory learning on the effects of chronic malnutrition, but a week is a damned good start and a whole lot more than most of those who determine social programs would do.

Personally, I really doubt this guy is really living on food stamps.

Well, no. That's the point.

Or did you mean sticking to his $21 budget for the week? Sounds to me like he did it. (But yeah, I think we both know all about "I'll have money for food next week, just got to make this $10 last the next five days." A week is nothing.)

I mean I doubt he even did it for a week.

I don't really doubt that he did this (like Mr Cynical ;-) ), but I don't think a week is really enough time to demonstrate anything. Did you see the episode of 30 Days in which he went a month on minimum wage? Even that month didn't seem like enough time, imo.

Nod. The one thing about doing *any* of these kinds of demonstrations is that you know it's a choice. Anything is easier if you've chosen to accept it, and if you know it's limited to a particular time frame.

But it does give some sense of the acute problems. I hope these folks recognize that difference.

I think Katrina has a point. It's the day after day unending slog that never lets up that's the killer. Never having a dime for something extra or fun or just because you'd like it. Eating bland high-starch foods because they're cheap. Doing without dinner because there's only enough for the kids or you, not both. Granted, I haven't had that last experience, but I've done without so a sick spouse could eat.

It's one thing when you're a college student. You can usually go home for the weekend and load up from Mom's pantry and you know it's time-limited. It's one thing when it's a week to make a point. It's another thing altogether when it's year after year after year.
